The Daily Mining Gazette

SAULT STE. MARIE -Delores Ann "Dee" Hill, 82, of Sault Ste. Marie and former Marquette resident, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, June 5, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital.

Born Jan. 5, 1930, in Saginaw, she was the daughter of Otto and Julia (Bauer) Arnold. Delores was raised on the family farm near Saginaw and graduated from Arthur Hill High School.

Following graduation, she was employed for a time in factory work in Saginaw.

In 1953, Delores met her future husband, Charles G.E. Hill, while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. The couple were married on June 25, 1955, and made their home in Saginaw.

In 1968, the family moved to Marquette where Charles was employed with Michigan Bell Telephone and Delores worked at the Rosewood Bar. Later she was manager of the Northwoods Supper Club for seven years before becoming one of the first bartenders to open J.T.'s Shaft. While in Marquette, she was very actively involved in volunteer work, especially with the Marquette Junior Hockey Organization, where her husband served as president for a time. Delores served as candy chairman for many years and helped out whenever necessary. She was a member of the Marquette Lions Club and was involved in many fund raising events.

In 1989, Charles and Delores sold their home in Marquette, traveled extensively for a time before making their home in Ontonagon near where Charles grew up. True to form, Delores was once again employed in serving the public, this time at Syl's Cafe in Ontonagon.

Charles preceded Delores in death in 1994.

For the past five years, she had made her home in Sault Ste. Marie, near her daughter.

Delores was a person of strong will and determination, and possessed a solid work ethic, which she passed on to her children. She had a wonderful sense of humor and could remember a joke, tell a joke and be the focus of a joke, all in good humor.

She especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. Her other interests included knitting, playing cribbage, going to the casino and caring for plants and animals.

While in Marquette, Delores was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and most recently of St. Barnabas Lutheran Church in Sault Ste. Marie.

A loving mother, proud grandparent and sister, Delores is survived by her children: Jack (Wendy Heller) Hill of Lawrenceville, N.J., Shelly (Keith) McGowan of Trout Lake, Roger Hill of Marquette and Stanley (Maria) Hill of Lincoln Park; grandchildren, Keith McGowan, Jr., Dennis McGowan, Rachel (Adam) Ball, Melissa Lancour-Birler, Daniel Chapman, Andrew and Lillian Hill; great-grandchildren, Cameran McGowan, Wyatt and Caitlynn Ball, and Allison Lancour-Birler; her brothers, Robert Arnold of Saginaw and Edgar Arnold of Riverview, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Darlene (Bill) Sands of Naples, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Delores was preceded in death by sisters-in-law, Donna and Dora Arnold and Betty (Joe) Brogan.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. Rev. Chad Ott will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Inurnment will be made in the Alston Cemetery.
