Irena Wisniewski

The Daily Mining Gazette

PAINESDALE - Irena Wisniewski, 86, passd away June 9, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital, after a short illness.

Irena was a heroically strong woman and found strength through her unwavering trust in God. Her life was extremely rough in her early years.

She was born in 1926, and at age 14, she was taken from her beloved Poland by the Nazis and forced to work wherever she was needed on various farms and factories.

Irena met and married Piotr Wisniewski, her husband of 41 years, at a displaced person camp in Germany when the war ended. Their first three sons, Tadeusz, Stefan and Ryszard were born during that time. In 1952, they migrated to the United States, settling in Painesdale, where Piotr found employement with the Copper Range Mining Co. Their last two children, Jerszy and Jon were born after their arrival.

Irena was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church in Painesdale and Altar Society and Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range to the present. She loved her dear Father John Martignon as a son.

Always such a hard worker and wanting a better life for her family, she worked at the old County Hospital and later, at Vollwerth's Sausage Company for many years until her retirement. She left many dear friends.

Irena loved to feed people and no one ever left her home hungry. Many people were blessed by and will remember her very special raspberry jam and Easter sausage, as well as her fantastic sense of humor, always a teaser and joker.

Irena was preceded in death by her mother, Ana and her father; her husband, Piotr; her sons, Tadeusz "Ted" and Ryszard "Roscoe"; her great-granddaughter, Tiffany; her brothers, Edward and Hendrick.

She is survived by three sons, Stefan (Marsha) of Painesdale, Jerszy "George" (Betty) of South Range and Jon (Heather) of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchilden; Tadeusz's family: Joan (Kyle) VanHouten and their three children and two grandchildren, Dawn (Karl) Nelson and their three children. She is survived by Stefan's family: Jerry (Patricia) Wisniewski and their three children; Stephanie Krieger and her three children; Susan Rohn and her three children; Tanya (Nathan) Maki and their three children; Alexis (Chad) Snell and their two children; Angelica (Anthony) Hebert and their three children; Ashley (Jeffrey) Sudderth and their two children; Stefan G. Wisniewski; Ryszard's family: Abel Keranen; Jerszy's family: Leila Wiles and her two children; Corrine (Robert) LaBonte and her two children; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Poland.

For her example of her trust in the Lord and her many years of suffering, sacrifice and prayers, she has passed her faith in God onto the family and we are all forever grateful. We all loved her so much.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 13, 2012, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range from 5 to 8 p.m. with the rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant. Burial will be in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range.

Arrangements are being handled by Antila Funeral Service, Inc., Mountain View Mortuary, 14 Seventh St., South Range, MI 49963. 906-482-8474.
