HANCOCK - Thomas Hendrick Sutinen, 74, a resident of Hancock, died on Monday, June 11, 2012, at Portage Health following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Liminga on July 15, 1937, a son of the late John and Mayme (Kuru) Sutinen and was a 1955 graduate of Houghton High School.
Tom resided in the Detroit area for a period of time where he worked as a draftsman for Chrysler Corporation. After returning to the area, he was employed for 39 years by Empire Gas Company, retiring from there.
On June 11, 1966, he was married to the former Dorothy "Dolly" Peryam in Laurium. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2005.
Tom was a Vietnam War veteran, serving as a Medic with the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, stationed in Germany. He was then transferred into the United States Army Reserve until 1967.
He was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran faith and a former member of Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion in Hancock.
Tom was an avid reader, spending numerous hours reading and studying the Christian Faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Tracy (Ron) Jaehnig and Amy (Al) Webber; two sons, Ernie and Paul Sutinen; four grandchildren, Courtney (Joseph) Supinsky, Alysha Frazier, Travis Frazier and Aaron Sutinen (Alysa Cherubini); one great-granddaughter, Keona Sutinen; a sister, Sandra Clairmont; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents and wife, Tom was also preceded in death by a brother, Gordon and a sister, Doris Kyllonen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Pastor Arvo Onermaa to officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
