HOUGHTON - With June being Adopt A Shelter Cat month, the Copper Country Humane Society is offering a deal for those wanting a feline roommate.
"We like to participate in (Adopt A Shelter Cat month) and it's all over the United States," shelter manager Lindsay Clouthier said. "What we offer is half off cat adoptions, which makes them 25 dollars, or adopt a cat and a get a second one for free. We like to encourage that one."
The start of summer is typically a slow time for cat adoptions, according to Clouthier, so it's a good time for Adopt A Shelter Cat Month. Yet before people rushes out to adopt a feline friend, they must know there is a process to go through.

A cat is shown at the Copper Country Humane Society in Houghton Wednesday night. The CCHS?is celebrating Adopt A Shelter Cat month by offering half-off the price for a cat adoption, or getting a second cat for free after adopting a first.
"First off, we have a five-page application to fill out - if you rent we have to check with your landlord to make sure it's OK," Clouthier said. "We then check with three references to make sure you'd be a responsible pet owner. If everything checks out OK, we can send that animal home with you."
Before the animal goes home, the CCHS spays or neuters the animal, tests for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, de-worms the animal and gives it any necessary vaccinations, all of which is included in the fee. Also included with a cat adoption is a 20-pound bag of litter gifted to CCHS by Dr. Elsey's, a bag of Science Diet food and a $10 gift card from Walmart.
The Copper Country Humane Society's hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. Friday. For more information, call 487-9560 or visit cchumanesociety.com.
