South Range still perfect

TAPIOLA - South Range used a big fifth inning to stay unbeaten in Over 50 Softball League play Thursday.

The 4-0 winners plated 10 runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 19-4 win over Houghton. Brien Ricci socked a long homer among five hits for the victors, while Dave Kaiponen also counted five raps.

Glenn Mitchell added four hits and Arnie Piiponen chipped in three more.

Joe Rossi gave up just six hits in claiming the mound win. Steve Dunstan was the losing pitcher for 1-3 Houghton.

Chassell evened its record at 2-2 with a 14-7 victory over Tapiola, breaking open a close game with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mitch Lake was the winning pitcher, with Jed Denomie taking the loss.

John Botto, Gordy Koski and Nick Lindemann led Chassell with three hits apiece.

Daryl Putala, Ray Tuominen, Brian Turner, Tino Kitalong and Al Eckhart had two safeties each.

Tapiola, now 1-3, received two hits from Jim Oikarinen and Dennis Salbashian.
