Walter D. Kinnunen, Sr.

ARNHEIM - Walter Douglas Kinnunen, Sr., 67, of Arnheim, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born Jan. 26, 1945, in Arnheim, son of Oiva and Margaret (Anttonen) Kinnunen. He lived in Arnheim his entire life.

Walter graduated from Baraga High School in 1963, then went into the U.S. Army until 1965. He married the former Carolyn Routsi.

Walter worked for Selkey Manufacturing for about five years, then was self-employed, retiring in 1987.

Walter was a past member of the Chassell VFW.

He loved hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his sons, Walter D. (Leah) Kinnunen, Jr. and Eric Kinnunen, both of Arnheim; daughters, Lisa (Curt) Benaglio of Battle Creek, Mich., and Amy (Jody) Pittsley of Baraga; brothers, Francis Kinnunen of Arnheim and John (Diane) Filpus of Chassell; and seven grandchildren, Megan and Bryan Kinnunen, Cody and Chelsea Pittsley, Rebecca, Trevor and Brandon Benaglio.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Oiva Kinnunen and Margaret Kinnunen Filpus; brother, Emil Filpus; and sisters, Bertha Saarinen, Lucille Hopp and Florence Kinnunen.

Walter's family would like to thank the Veteran's Administration, Houghton County Medical Care Facility and Portage Health Home Care & Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portage Health Foundation - Hospice Fund, 821 W. Water St., Hancock, MI 49930.

Services will be held Friday, June 29, 2012, in Jacobson Funeral Home at 3 p.m. with Baraga County Area Veterans conducting military rites under the direction of American Legion Post 444, followed by a memorial service with Rev. Dave Weber officiating. Family will receive friends for one hour prior to services. A luncheon and fellowship will follow in the Sharing Room at Jacobson Funeral Home.
