CALUMET - Mildred E. Heltunen, 93, of Calumet, passed away June 23, 2012. She had spent the last three years at the homes of her daughters, Carol and Jean, and most recently, the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
Mildred was born in Calumet Oct. 13, 1918, to Gust and Lempi Junttila. She attended Calumet Public Schools and graduated in 1936. She graduated from Michael Reese School of Nursing in 1940 and worked as a pediatric nurse in Chicago until 1943.
She then moved to Detroit and worked as a public health nurse until 1947.
After her children were grown, she returned to nursing as an RN in a nursing home in Southfield.
Mildred was united in marriage to Arnold Heltunen on April 5, 1947. They made their home in Southfield until Arnold retired in 1976, then moved to Calumet.
Mildred was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.
Arnold preceded her in death on June 23, 2001. Also preceding her were her parents; four brothers, Wilbert, Reuben, George and Carl; and one sister, Eleanor.
She is survived by one son, Robert (JoAnne) Heltunen of Laurium; three daughters, Kathy (Paul) Kero of Negaunee, Jean (Robert) Edwards of Ishpeming and Carol (Hans) Impola of Cokato, Minn.; two sisters, Mabel Bohjanen and Margaret Benda; four sisters-in-law, Angie Junttila, Sylvia Golka, Ann Severance and Phyllis (Bob) Rogers; two brothers-in-law, Paul (Phyllis) Heltunen and Ralph (Virginia) Heltunen; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; one dear first cousin, Edith Niederer and other cousins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Heltunen will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with Pastor Richard Eskola officiating. Burial in Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday also in the church.
The Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family.
