MOHAWK - Marlene Mae Haataja, 79, a resident of Mohawk, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Portage Health in Hancock.
Marlene was born May 15, 1933, in Mohawk, a daughter of Ludwig and Ellen (Korhonen) Nordstrom. She attended the local schools and graduated from Calumet High School with the Class of 1952.
She worked as an underwriter for Finnish Mutual Insurance Company which is now Northern Mutual Insurance.
Country music was an important part of her life. Marlene was instrumental in starting and keeping guitar lessons going at her church with Pastor Al. Her church and her faith were a central part of her life. Her other main priority was loving and caring for her family.
On July 11, 1953, Marlene married Ezra Haataja.
She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Ezra; sons, Ron (Lynn) of Ft. Worth, Texas, Mike (Betty) of Nashville, Tenn., and Dave (Linda) of Arlington Heights, Ill.; one grandchild, Heather Haataja; a brother, Donald (Beverly) Nordstrom; and a sister, Virginia Lassila of Mohawk.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk with Pastor Tim Johnston officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial to be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
The Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements.
