HOUGHTON - Houghton High School Principal Kass Simila announced her retirement from the district at Monday's Houghton-Portage Township School District board meeting.
"I have had a blast working at this school, and I just want to thank you for allowing me to do it for so long," she told the board members, who applauded her.
Simila had spent 14 years as principal of the school.
"I think about the fact that I've probably seen a couple of thousand kids go through this school, and that's kind of amazing," she said.
Superintendent Doreen Klingbeil said Simila had worked hard to continue the school's high academic standards, including keeping up to date with changes with state and federal requirements..
"This being my first year here, I learned a lot from Kass about the high school program and the high school curriculum, and she was always willing to meet with me and share information with me and answer all of my questions at anytime, even though they might have been questions that other people didn't need to ask," she said.
Board President Buck Foltz complimented her for her achievements.
"You're responsible for being a very important part of all the things that are good about this school - and it is a very good school," he said. "For that, I'm really grateful. ... You've made this a great place, better than when you got here."
