Cristina Maria Meinardi

HANCOCK - Cristina Maria Meinardi, 94, of Hancock, entered eternal life on Saturday, July 14, 2012, after a two-year battle with cancer.

She was born March 5, 1918, in San Giorgio Canavese, Italy and was the daughter of Giacomo and Maria (Mussiri) Enrico. She attended the local school in Italy.

Cristina worked on the family farm and in the textile mills until marrying Joseph Meinardi on August 26, 1948, in Italy. She came to the United States in March 1949.

She was a homemaker and also worked in the family Hancock grocery store, Meinardi's, until it closd in 1975.

She was well-known for her love of flowers, especially African violets, and her garden. She enjoyed baking Italian biscotti, pizzelli and torchetti, giving most away to friends and family.

She was a faithful member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, attending daily mass for all of her adult life. She was a member of the Rosary Makers, having made over 7,000 rosaries in 10 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of Italy and was honored as the Daughter of the Year in 2009.

Cristina was preceded in death by her husband in April 1976; her parents; a brother; and a sister.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicky (Tom) Vichich of Hancock; two grandchildren, Kristen of DePere, Wis. and Joe of Detroit; one sister, Gina; two nieces and a nephew, all in Italy; numerous cousins in Italy and Argentina.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Fr. Brian Gerber to officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Friends may call in the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. and in the church from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Resurrection, 900 Quincy St., Hancock, MI 49930 or the Hancock Public Schools Foundation (Elementary School Library Fund), 501 Campus Drive, Hancock, MI 49930 in her name.
