MANISTIQUE - Two of the young guns in the Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association tournament are still alive and kicking after the first day of match play.
Avery Rochester, a Marquette Senior High School student and Zoe Woodworth, a recent graduate of Calumet High School, are both advancing to Wednesday after winning their first round matchups at Indian Lake Golf and Country Club.
Rochester, who was paired with Janet Hruska, cruised to a 6-and-5 and was slated to tee off at 9:40 today against No. 8 seed Pam Frankini.
Woodworth, seeded third, also rolled into round two, taking out Heidi Olson 5-and-4. Woodworth teed off today at 9:50 against No. 6 Polly Anderson. Anderson rolled to a 6-and-5 win over Michelle Mansfield.
Cathy Shamion was the only lower seed to advance from the first round. Shamion, the 13th seed, upset Karen McCorkle 3-and-2.
Judy LaValley, JoAnn Poncino and Jackie Villemure also moved on, with LaValley topping Nancy Osier 2-and-1 and Poncino eliminating Jane Dickow 6-and-5.
