ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Joyce Marcella Keskitalo, 83, passed away Friday, July 13, 2012, of natural causes.
Joyce was born February 2, 1929, the first daughter of Otto and Hilma Alatalo in Laurium. She grew up in Sunshine Location on Quincy Hill and was a graduate of Hancock High School, Class of 1946.
After high school, she worked as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell.
She married Selmer (Sully) Kalen on October 4, 1947. After they were married, they lived on and off in the Detroit area, returning to the Copper Country in 1968 when they purchased the family farm in Sunshine Location.
In the 1970s, she worked in sales for WMPL radio in Hancock. Sully passed away in 1974.
Joyce married Wallace (Wally) Keskitalo on September 7, 1976, and resided in Dollar Bay for the next 26 years. Wally passed away in 2002. Since then, she had resided at the Bluffs in Houghton and then in Ironwood to be close to her sister. In May, 2012, she moved to Calif. to be closer to family.
She was diagnosed with late stage autoimmune liver disease in June. She passed away peacefully at her home with family by her side.
She is survived by four sons: Gary (Rose) Kalen of Canby, Ore., David (Kari) Kalen of Jackson, Mich., Brian Kallioinen of Minneapolis and Jim (Anne) Kalen of Fullerton, Calif; six grandchildren, Kelly Wickersham of Salem, Ore., John Wickersham of Pflugerville, Texas, David Selmer Kalen of Elwood, Ind., Jeff Richard of Stafford, Texas, Sarah (Daniel) Lichtmann of San Diego, Calif. and Rachel Kalen of Fullerton, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Alex and Anthony Brewster of Pflugerville, Texas, and JoAnne Grace Kalen of Elwood, Ind.; her sister, Gladys Salmi of Ironwood.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 27 at 1 p.m. in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
