AHMEEK - Vienna Balbough, 94, a resident of Ahmeek, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2012, at Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
She was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Boston Location, a daughter of the late Andrew and Liisa Juntunen. Both parents immigrated from Demon, Finland to Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
She attended Calumet High School and later graduated from Suomi College of Business. Vienna worked for a short time as a bookkeeper in Chicago. She then relocated to Detroit with her college classmates and met her husband-to-be at a local ice skating rink.
She was married to Cletus David Balbough on April 7, 1945, in the parlor of his family home by the family's Catholic priest.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Cletus David, a veteran of WWII in the U.S. Navy and a life-long employee of the Michigan DNR Parks Division; a son, David Edward, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years; and an infant brother, Walfred Juntunen.
Surviving are a son, Clete (Joanne) Balbough of Porcupine Mountains, Ontonagon; a daughter-in-law, Coreen Balbough of Ahmeek; granddaughters, Tawnee (Todd) Phillips of Decatur, Mich., and Sarah (Matthew) Acevedo of Plainfield, Conn.; grandsons, William (Brenda) Balbough of Barryton, Mich. and Steven Balbough of Farwell, Mich.; and five great-grandchildren, Aimee, Ryan, Emily, David and Andrew.
Private family services will be held. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
The Erickson Crowley Funeral home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
