PAHRUMP, Nev. - Bertha Elvida Chaput, 87, formerly of White Pine and Mass City, passed away Jan. 2, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nev., of cardiopulmonary arrest while in rehabilitation for a hip fracture.
We lost a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great- grandmother, great-great- grandmother, friend and so much more.
Born at home in Rubicon, Mich., to Sam and Linda (Suominen) Frisk on Jan. 31, 1924, and married to Edward Chaput in Baltic in 1942.
Bertha worked in the Mass City Schools in the cafeteria, White Pine Motel, Motel 8 and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
Over the years, Bertha was active in many areas, including the White Pine Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, St. Jude's Altar Society, Cub Scout den mother and homemaker. She was always active with arts and crafts, and, as most depression-era children, was very handy around the home.
Bertha held several patents for inventions and was an entrepreneur, starting a corporation dedicated to senior and rehabilitative exercise videos at age 83.
Bertha was preceded in death by her three sons, Joseph in 1942, Edward in 1953 and James in 1959; her husband, Edward, 1986; her parents; grandson, Jeffery Penegor; and sister, Hildah Moilanen.
Bertha is survived by her children, Jeanette Penegor, Pauline (Chaput) Ison and Tom (Debbie) Chaput; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, William "Wilho" (Ada) Frisk; sister-in-law, Jeanne Verbanac; brother-in-law, Henry "Hank" Turcotte; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Per her request, cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial/interment service officiated by Pastor John Autio will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland with lunch at Grandma Myrt's in Mass City to follow.
Local arrangements are being handled by the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
