DOLLAR BAY - Valerie Jean Sandel passed away at her home after a short bout with a very aggressive cancer on July 26, 2012, at the age of 71.
Valerie was born near L'Anse on Feb. 4, 1941, the daughter of Lyla and Edward Frosland. She attended L'Anse Schools and was voted queen of her high school prom.
Her natural talent in music allowed her to learn to play the piano, ukulele and guitar by ear and to harmonize when singing. She also participated in the high school chorus and took piano lessons in her later high school years.
From childhood, she accepted the Lord as savior and became a member of the L'Anse Baptist church.
Shortly after graduation, she married Vernon Sandel, who as a teenager had been her second-grade Sunday School teacher. While her husband was in college, she worked as a typist and clerk but dedicated herself to hearth and home to raise her children, Greg and Patti.
She also served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher and as pianist through the years at Evangel Baptist, Houghton Baptist, Maranatha Church and Licking Christian Church in Missouri where she and Vern wintered.
In later, years, Valerie took up scrap booking and recorded much of the family history in her albums.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon Sandel; son Gregory Sandel; daughter, Patti (George) Hansen; two grandchildren, Holly and Tommy; her mother, Lyla Eccles; and sister, Sally (Clark) Givens.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at Houghton Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012. A luncheon will be served after the service.
