DOLLAR BAY - Paul E. O'Brien, 86, a resident of Dollar Bay, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2012, at the Omega House in Houghton following a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 2, 1925, in Laurium, a son of the late James and Jennie (Tomasi) O'Brien. Paul graduated from Sacred Heart School in Laurium and attended Suomi College and Michigan State University.

Paul was a veteran, having served with the United States Navy aboard a Destroyer Escort during World War II.

Paul worked with his father at the O'Brien's Club and for the State of Michigan with the Department of Human Services, retiring after 25 years.

Paul resided in Laurium and, since 1986, made his home in Dollar Bay.

He was a life member of Bay Post 6028 VFW in Dollar Bay. Mr. O'Brien was a past secretary for the MSEA and also belonged to the SERA (Retired State Employees). He was a former active member of the Laurium Volunteer Fire Department, serving as secretary along with serving as past secretary for the Copper Country Fire Fighters Association and Upper Peninsula Fire Fighters Association.

He loved to bowl and followed the Green Bay Packers where he was a season ticket holder and attended nearly every game since World War II, including the Super Bowl held in New Orleans.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Barbara Berghefer; and his brothers, James and Robert.

Surviving are his wife, Norma O'Brien of Dollar Bay; special niece and nephew, Colleen Berghefer of Texas and Brian (MariAnne) Bergefer of Laurium; and seveal other nieces, nephews and cousins.
