Dale L. Hanes

BOOTJACK - Dale L. Hanes, 73, a resident of Bootjack, passed away peacefully in Northville, Mich., at his daughter's home early Friday morning, July 27, 2012, surrounded by his family.

Dale was born Aug. 13, 1938, the son of Fred and Barbara (Atkins) Hanes in Leslie, Mich.

He attended local schools, graduating from Concord High School in 1956. Dale was a star athlete lettering in football, baseball and basketball in high school. He attended Michigan Technological University where he earned a degree in accounting in 1963. At Tech, Dale was a four-year starter at linebacker where he was named MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in 1961.

He worked briefly for General Motors in Livonia before returning to the Copper Country to begin a 35-year career with Tech.

On May 12, 1962, Dale married Mary Ann Boggio in Mohawk. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May of this year. Dale and Mary Ann split time between Bootjack and Boynton Beach, Fla.

Over the years, they enjoyed their many friends, golfing, shuffleboard and many other activities.

He was active in the community as a founding member of the Calumet All Sports Booster Club and was also a member of the Calumet Senior Golf League. Dale enjoyed golf and bowling with all his new and loving friends in Boynton Beach. He was also a great woodworker and made many treasured chests, shelves and furniture for family and friends. He was an avid card player and especially loved euchre and cribbage.

Dale was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He will be sorely missed but his spirit and the memories he created with his family and friends will remain in our hearts forever.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Edwin Moffett; his brother, Lyle; his aunt, JoAnne Atkins.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; sons Todd (Maria) Hanes of Alpharetta, GA and Mark (Jamie) Hanes of Negaunee; daughters, Lynn (Walter) Dorfstatter of Northville, MI, and Julie (Troy) Londo of Novi, Mich.; grandchildren, Adam, Emilie, Ashley, Alana, Logan, Nolan, Luke, Nick and Olivia; brother, Harry (Billie) Hanes of Concord, Mich.; special uncle and deer camp buddy, Harry ("Unc") (Vickie) Atkins of Boyne City, Mich.; sister-in-law, Doris (Joe) Galetto of Lake Linden; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral serices will be held Saturday, August 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet with Father Abraham officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be Friday, August 3, 2012, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. A prayer service will follow at 7:30.
