John Douglas “Buck” “Earl” Talvensaari

CALUMET - John Douglas Talvensaari, 91, a former Calumet resident, passed away Friday evening, July 27, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where he had resided for the past several years.

John, son of John and Ellen (Erickson) Talvensaari, was born in Painesdale on July 13, 1921. He grew up in Centennial Heights and attended the local schools.

He left to go to the Detroit area to work in the auto factories. He joined the 107th Combat Engineers and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. John also sailed the Great Lakes and worked in the local mines.

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Bette Mattila; brother, Roy Talvensaari; and lady friend, Edith Bowen.

Survivors include daughters, Lynn Zapolnek of Lansing and Kerry (Steve) Schmaltz of LaCrosse, Wis.; a son, Tom (Debbie) Talvensaari of LacLaBelle; grandchildren, Jennifer (Sam) Morris and family, Lori (John) Horsfall and family, Kimberly Schmaltz, Jeannette Krock and family, Scott Morris, Luke Mattila, Brian (Stephanie) Talvensaari and family and Amy (Buster) Roberts and family; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Beaudoin; one brother, Bob (Darlene) Talvensaari; one sister-in-law, Marion Talvensaari; children and families of the late Edith Bowen; and

numeous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility who took such good care of him, as well as to Aspirus Keweenaw Memorial Hospital and his physicians, Drs. Hafeman and Shebuski, and also, to his former Calumet neighbors for their assistance over the years.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A private family service will take place at a later time in Atlantic Mine.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to one's favorite charity.
