CHASSELL - Hattie C. Vial, 93, a resident of Chassell, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday morning, July 30, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past three years.
She was born November 16, 1918, in Hurontown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Cora (Van Dell) Stone. Hattie graduated from Houghton High School and then received her nursing degree.
Mrs. Vial had worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hancock, as a private duty nurse in the area and then retired from the Houghton County Medical Care Facility as a floor supervisor. Hattie also owned and operated her own antique business, The Eagle Shop in Chassell.
Hattie was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Chassell where she was active with the Altar Society. She was a 50-year member of Chassell Post 4607 VFW Auxiliary and helped with the United Way each year.
Hattie was always active. In her younger years, she learned to fly airplanes, played ice hockey and enjoyed downhill skiing. She also enjoyed working with crafts, sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Joseph; and her sister, Marie Kimmel.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Taylor of Grand Haven, Mich.; her sons, Eric Vial of Renton, Wash. and Robert Vial of Chassell; her grandson, Kyle Taylor; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Chassell with Fr. Al Mott to celebrate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Plowe Funeral Home in Houghton where Chassell Post 4607 VFW Auxiliary will hold honors at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until time of services in the church.
