To the editor:
As a current college student and graduate from one of our local public schools, it is disheartening to see the cuts made on our public schools and the attacks on teachers. Over the past year and a half, our current State Representative Matt Huuki (R-Atlantic Mine) has voted to cut $1 billion from public education and has attacked teachers' benefits across the board. But the people who are hurting the most from these cuts are our children.
From an economic standpoint, the children who are being taught today are going to become the future leaders of tomorrow. It is imperative that we invest in education to ensure America's economic future. The more educated, skilled, and talented workforce within the state of Michigan means more jobs and continued economic success. We need to have a strong workforce if we want to compete in the competitive global economy.
Michigan Technological University is the largest employer in Houghton County and in the 110th State House District. It is ranked as one of the best universities in the country and is a major asset to our area. When it receives large cuts like the one Rep. Matt Huuki voted for, it means less money it can put toward helping students afford college and less money going toward research which will make it lose its competitiveness as a top research university. If the university cannot thrive, then it means more layoffs.
Scott Dianda understands that our public schools are at the heart of the 110th district. Our schools bring our community together in many ways and produce well-rounded successful individuals. Scott will make sure that our schools receive the proper funding they need to keep teachers employed so class sizes are small, bring new technology into the classroom, and make sure extracurricular programs are not cut to keep our children off the streets. Scott believes that teachers should be respected in their work and we should provide them with the necessary resources so they can adequately teach our children.
After listening to Scott Dianda talk about education, I know he understands the value of our public schools. He will be receiving my vote Tuesday for State Representative in the Democratic primary.
