TAPIOLA - South Range wrapped up the Over 50 Softball League title Thursday night by outlasting Houghton.
Up by a 17-7 margin heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Range needed a game-saving catch by outfielder Ed Hartel to hang on for a 17-15 victory. Houghton had loaded the bases with two out.
Jim Poutinen paced the 8-1 winners with four hits, while winning pitcher Joe Rossi, Dick Franti, Glenn Mitchell and Eugene Billie added three raps each.
Houghton, 3-6 on the season, received three raps from Dave LeGault. Chester Marcol and Pete Negro had two hits apiece and Pete Pellisero cracked a homer.
Steve Dunstan was the losing pitcher.
In the other game last night, Tapiola scored a 10-4 win over Chassell and took over second place in the standings.
Jed Denomie was the winning hurler, with Mitch Lake taking the loss on the mound.
Jim Oikarinen cracked out three hits to lead the 5-4 winners. Andy Heikkinen, Dennis Salbashian and Pete Oikarinen each added two raps.
Chassell, 4-5 on the year, was paced Brian Turner's three hits. John Botto, Ray Tuominen and Mike Drewyor each chipped in two raps.
The regular season ends next week, but two games canceled by rain earlier in the season may have to be played to decide seeding for the playoffs.
