Waino Y. Asunmaa

CALUMET - Waino Y. Asunmaa, 87, of Calumet, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where he had resided for the past two years.

Waino, son of Anselm and Lydia (Kaikkonen) Asunmaa, was born in Calumet on January 6, 1925. He grew up in the Betsy area where he also attended school.

Waino served in WWII and was stationed in Germany and England.

He worked in the woods, as a miner in the copper and iron mines and as a commercial fisherman out of Big Betsy where he retired in 1980.

On Sept. 17, 1946, at the age of 21, he married Jean Kilpela. They were married for 65 years.

Since his retirement, Waino enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, visiting with people and his camp in Big Betsy.

Waino was a good horseshoe player and played weekly in Copper City and Calumet. He also looked forward to playing in the annual tournament in Wyoming (Keweenaw County).

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Paul Belkonen; and his sister, Elma Ellis.

Surviving are his wife, Jean of Calumet; daughters, Donna (Robert) Shea of Calumet and Denise (Jerome) Spagnotti of Calumet; son, Daryl Asunmaa of Cetennial Heights; grandchildren, Scott (Melanie) Karrio of Allouez, Jillian Spagnotti of Calumet, and Jerome Spagnotti II of Kalamazoo; great-grandchild, Logan Karrio of Allouez; sister-in-law, Jean Belkonen of Houghton; several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Houghton County Medical Care Facility who took such good care of him as well as his physician, Dr. Sigurds Janners.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A private family gathering will take place at a later time in Big Betsy.
