To the editor:
The Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club's 9th annual kids fishing derby was again a success. More than 150 kids enjoyed a great day of fishing at Swedetown Pond on July 21.
Twenty-five club members registered the boys and girls, put the worms on hooks, attached hooks and bobbers, measured fish, prepared lunch and awarded prizes. Drew Bjorn accepted the top prize of $50 donated by Sprenger Electric for catching the largest fish. Austin Ylitilo won first prize for the boys with Brandon Godin taking second. Mikayla Thomas and Emily Lanhala caught the largest fish for the girls.
Several other kids won fishing rods and reels and tackle boxes in the raffle drawings. All the kids took home a goodie bag.
Special thanks to Mark Butke and Dan Dube from the Master Walleye Circuit for allowing kids to view their boat and answer their questions. Thank you to our sponsors - Our Lady of Mercy Nursing Home, R.C. Mechanical, Quality Hardware of Lake Linden and Bay Electric for donating fishing prizes for the kids.
Thank you to the following donors for your support of kids having fun fishing: Calumet Township Supervisor Paul Lehto, U.P. Whitetails of the Keweenaw, Eric Smith, Vollwerth's, Louie's Foods, Wal-Mart, Burger King of Calumet, Harter Enterprises, Pat's IGA, Victoria's Kitchen, Calumet Mercantile, John Jilbert, Disney Worms, Keweenaw Auto Body, Americinn of Calumet, Watersmeet Fish Hatchery and Jim's Septic.
A special thank you to the parents and grandparents accompanying their children to the fishing derby. It was a pleasure for the club members to help make it an enjoyable day for all.
