TAPIOLA - Houghton may have finished last in the Over 50 Softball League standings this past season, but it's making a statement in the playoffs.
A 7-3 win over Chassell Thursday night put the winners into the semifinals next Thursday against the winner of Monday's Chassell-South Range game loser's bracket contest.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth inning, Houghton scored four times in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Steve Dunstan was the winning pitcher, giving up nine hits. Mitch Lake absorbed the mound loss, yielding 14 safeties.
Dave Wisti laced out three hits for the winners, with Jim Meagher, Jed Pollard, Dave Hoffman and Dave LeGault adding two raps each.
Ray Tuominen picked up two hits for Chassell.
In the second game last night, South Range stayed alive with an 8-4 win over Tapiola.
Glenn Mitchell had the big hit - a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth frame. That snapped a 4-4 deadlock that had been created when Tapiola tallied three runs in the fifth inning.
Dick Franti paced the regular season champs with three hits, while Mitchell, Ed Hartel, Joe Geborkoff and Brien Ricci contributed two hits apiece.
Joe Rossi allowed just eight hits in claiming the mound win. Jed Denomie gave up 16 raps in defeat.
Denomie had two of the Tapiola hits.
Chassell and South Range meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
