Raymond and Irene (Besonen) Kauppila

MARQUETTE- Raymond and Irene (Besonen) Kauppila, formerly of Hancock, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Saturday, June 23, 2012, during a family dinner held at The Landmark Inn in Marquette, where it all began 60 years earlier!

Raymond and Irene were married at the bride's home in Trout Creek, Mich., June 21, 1952, and spent their honeymoon night at the same historic hotel. They have kept the receipt from that night in their wedding album. The nightly rate of $6.50 has gone up significantly since then.

The best man was the late Wally Hakkola, friend of the groom and the maid of honor was the late Nancy (Besonen) Raczynski, sister of the bride. They began their married life in Hammond, Ind., where two of their children were born, Richard Kauppila of Negaunee and Susan (Kauppila) Bovid of Midland, Mich. A third child, Audrey (Kauppila) Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis., was born after their move to Beaver Grove, Mich., and a fourth child Kandace (Kauppila) Reckinger of Sussex, Wis., was born in Hancock, where Raymond served as a professor at Michigan Technological University for 31 years, retiring in 1988.

Raymond and Irene currently reside in Marquette.
