L'ANSE - Jaimie Middleton's kill tied the fifth set at 13 and Lake Linden-Hubbell recorded the last two points on her serve as the Lakes pulled out a 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 15-13) decision in non-conference play Thursday.
LL-H trailed 10-5 in the fifth, but two Ciara Larson aces and three of Brittni Kisul's game-high 15 kills helped put the Lakes in the lead, 12-10. L'Anse took the serve back and added two more points, but couldn't close out the visitors.
After losing the first set, the Lakes evened it up with 13 kills to punch out an opening in a set that was tied eight times, as the LL-H top trio of Kisul, Larson and Mandy Perreault combined for nine kills. The Lakes took the lead with the help of five aces in the third set, but L'Anse sent it to a fifth as LL-H made four service errors and eight hitting errors in the fourth.
"Very exciting match ... could be the best I've ever coached," L'Anse coach Anna Bradfish said. "Mental lapse during the third game due to an injury, but we pulled it back together for the fourth game."
Sarah Audette dished out 21 assists to lead the Lakes.
In addition to Kisul's 15 kills, Perreault had 12 and Larson eight. Kisul was also LL-H's dig leader with 17. Larson added 11, Brooke Corrigan and Middleton 10. Larson added a team-best seven aces.
For L'Anse, Val Rajala was among team leaders in both kills (nine) and digs (15). Amanda Dufek was the L'Anse dig leader with 17, while Heather McCarthy (13) and Shantell Ekdahl (11) also cracked double digits. Rebecca Hulkonen added eight kills and six digs. McCarthy had 18 assists.
