CADILLAC - The Calumet Copper Kings drove the farthest and played the best of all the visiting teams at the Cadillac Invitational Thursday, but the hosts defeated the Copper Kings in the championship match.

"I am proud of the aggressive mode many players exhibited today. The goal was to win the tournament, and even though we fell short, all in all, it was a good day," Calumet coach Lisa Twardzik said.

The Copper Kings swept Roscommon (25-18, 25-20), McBain (25-22, 25-12) and Reed City (25-18, 25-13) in morning pool play and advanced to the championship bracket.

In the knockout stage, the Kings took down Big Rapids 2-1 (25-16, 22-25, 15-10) and Traverse City Central 2-1 (21-25, 25-17, 15-9).

Senior Kristy Lasanen had a team-leading 39 kills for the day. Ellen Twardzik added 29 and Lexie Rowe 27.

Terra Erkkila racked up 63 digs and Kayleen Anderson 106 assists to go with her 15 digs.

The Kings also got 15 aces, 10 kills and 10 digs from Molly Loukus, 10 aces from Ellen Twardzik, 14 kills from Loretta Anderson, 20 digs from Catherine Frantti and 15 digs and seven aces from Grace Hyrkas.
