Berry-picking fundraiser on tap

CHASSELL - Berry pickers wanted.

Opa's Organic Blueberries of Chassell is holding a fundraiser during daylight hours Saturday and Sunday to help raise money for two organizations - Copper Country Humane Society and the Keweenaw Spay and Neuter Assistance Group.

"There are a lot of berries this year and we don't want to waste them so we thought we'd give back to the community and help these organizations out," owner Garth Jurgensen said. "We're all animal lovers."

Opa's Organic Blueberries is located at 38554 Klingville Road just south of Chassell off U.S. 41.

Jurgensen said his eight-acre farm uses zero chemicals and contains a variety of blueberries from sweet to bitter.

Pickers are encouraged to bring their own containers, however Jurgensen said he does have some recycled ice cream pails and coffee cans for people to use.

Once the berries are picked, he said, the berries are weighed.

"All proceeds are going to be divvied up," he said.

Pre-picked berries will also be available for purchase, Jurgensen said.

While the berry-picking season typically runs through the end of August, Jurgensen said the warm temperatures in the spring may add an extra week this year.

"I'm expecting this year it will go until the first week of September," he said. "But we'll see."
