ONTONAGON - Ontonagon couldn't keep pace with North Central in both teams' 2012 football openers, as the Jets flew away with a 48-14 non-league victory.
"We started off kind of holding our own with them and it was clear our guys just got worn down,"?Ontonagon coach Dave Linczeski said, noting that the 80-plus degree heat was something his team hadn't seen in preseason practice.
Tony Soumis put Ontonagon ahead early after breaking a big touchdown run, but the Jets tied the game just before halftime on an 11-yard bootleg run by quarterback Rob Granquist just before the half.
Also just before the half, Suomis was forced to exit with an apparent concussion, leaving the Gladiators without their primary passer and a defensive leader.
Josh Granquist scored on a 22-yard run just 2:11 into the second half and the Jets led to the finish.
The Jets ran for 331 yards, led by 143 from Josh Granquist on 14 carries. He scored two touchdowns.
