CHASSELL - Genevieve (Jakiel) Guzek, 96, passed away on May 11, 2012, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident for a short time.
She was born June 27, 1915, in Detroit, the daughter of John and Sali Jakiel. Genevieve attended school in Possen, Mich., and after moving back to Detroit, met her future husband, Teofil.
They were united in marriage on Oct. 7, 1939, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hamtramck, Mich.
Genevieve worked at Detroit Aluminum and Brass during WW II, then at Kowalski Sausage Company and R.L. Polk Company before retiring in 1972 to care for her husband.
She and Teofil moved to Chassell in 1987 and became members of St. Anne's Parish. She was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society and was on the Bereavement Committee.
She enjoyed gardening, baking and working around the house.
Genevieve is survived by her son, Thomas Guzek of Houghton; grandchildren, James Guzek of Chassell and Bryan (Melissa) Guzek of Scituate, Mass. and their children, Daniel and Benjamin; a sister, Sophie (Edward) Phillips of St. Claire Shores, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 59 years, Teofil; her parents, John and Sali; brothers, Edward Jakiel, Henry (Pola) Jakiel; sisters, Bernice (Henry) Tyburskie and Stephanie Jakiel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Chassell with Fr. Al Mott to officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services in St. Anne's Catholic Church.
