CALUMET - Helen Julia Korvanen, 99, passed away at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility on Aug. 9, 2012, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Traprock May 31, 1913, a daughter of the late Charles and Amanda (Luokkanen) Amala.

Helen married Samuel Korvanen in 1933 in Houghton. They spent most of their life in the Detroit area. Following Sam's death, Helen returned to Calumet where she made her home.

She was a member of the National Lutheran Church in Calumet and a member of the choir and various circles.

She enjoyed entertaining friends and doing handwork.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam; son, Kurt; daughter-in-law, Phyllis; step-daughter, Dorothy Tikkanen and her husband, Al; five sisters, Lillian Roberts, Sophie Ollila, Viola Rozich, Vivian Blau and Melma Giachino; four brothers, Wilbur, John, Arnold and Leo.

Helen loved her family and had a special relationship with her grandson, Stephen, his wife Diane and their children, Helena and Stephen of Florida. She is also survived by grand-daughters, Sharon Cwikla, Lenea Petacio and Cindy Duncan, all of Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

She had a special love for her niece, Corinne Koski, who lovingly cared for her for many years.

The family wishes to thank the Houghton County Medical Care Facility staff for their wonderful care and the love they showed to Helen right to the end of her life.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a future date.

The Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements.
