HOUGHTON - "Where Soldiers Come From," a local documentary following a group of friends who enlisted in the military immediately after high school, has been nominated for a 2012 News and Documentary Emmy.

The film, directed by former resident Heather Courtney, received a nod in the outstanding continuing coverage of a news story - long form category, and is going against films and stories made by Frontline, HBO Documentary Films, Independent Lens, NOVA and a fellow POV nominee. The winners will be announced Oct. 1 at an awards ceremony in New York.

There will be an encore presentation of the film on PBS at 10 p.m. Sept. 7 as part of the POV program.

Over the past year and a half, the film has garnered positive reviews from The New York Times and The Washington Post, and also won the Indie Spirit Award and awards from the SXSW Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival, Philadelphia Film Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival.
