Injuries overwhelm Gladiators

September 1, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

IRONWOOD - Mounting injuries forced Ontonagon to throw in the towel Friday in a non-conference game against Ironwood.

Sophomore back Drew Morris suffered an inadvertent blow to the head at the 7:52 mark of the second quarter. Coach Dave Linczeski told the Daily Globe of Ironwood Morris momentarily lost consciousness.

Ontonagon does not have a junior varsity and Linczeski said the team was down to 18 guys (with four freshmen) after losing three two-way starters in last Friday's game against North Central and having David Pollard sprain a knee earlier in the game.

"For player safety, I cannot put in kids not ready to play on varsity. We did what we had to do," Linczeski said.

The game was called after 51 minutes.

Before the unusual ending, Ironwood led 20-6. Adam Mackey had the first score of the game, a 58-yard option run.

The Gladiators responded, going 58 yards in 10 plays, ending in a 3-yard run by Morris.

Cole Stevens responded with back-to-back touchdowns late in the first and early in the second quarter.

Mackey led all rushers with 114 yards on six carries.

Dylan Morris posted 37 yards on six attempts for Ontonagon.

Ironwood is at Houghton Friday in WestPAC play. Ontonagon is scheduled to host L'Anse.
