LAKE?LINDEN?- Vernon "Vern"?Jolly, 72, a resident of Lake Linden, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born on April 6, 1940, in Lake Linden, a son of the late Leo and Amanda (Allwin)?Jolly. Vern graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School with the class of 1958. Following graduation from high school, Vern enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Cuban Crisis and later was stationed at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War era. While in the Navy, he attended IBM?Technical School in Endicott, N.Y. After his time in the service, Vern worked for Jilbert Dairy and for 30 years as a route delivery salesman for Bunny Bread, Our Own Bakery and eventually, Sara Lee until his retirement in 2000.
Vern was involved in many activities in the community,?serving as a Councilman and later President of Lake Linden Village. He was a member of the Torch Lake Sewage Authority for 20 years and coached Little League baseball and the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School hockey team. He also enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting and fishing. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and Green Bay Packers fan. For the past 10 years, he and his wife Nancy spent the winter months in Lakeland, Fla.
On April 2, 1960, he was married to the former Nancy Haataja.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post 90 of Lake Linden and a past member of the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lions Club and the Lake Linden Sportsman's Club. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Paulette Roy; a brother, Leo "Willy"?Jolly; and his son, James Jolly, in 2009.
Surviving Vern are his wife, Nancy; a son, Scott (Susan) Jolly of York, Pa.; his one special and much-loved grandson, Cooper Jolly; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Jolly of Lake Linden; three sisters, Joan Gerard of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Mary Rose (Gordon)?Moyle of Negaunee and Gloria (Jim)?Wyllie of Hancock; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Jolly of Calumet; aunts, uncles and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate.
Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet on Monday, September 3, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday.
Burial with military rites conducted by the Copper Country Veterans Association will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
