North Coast Counseling celebrates one year in Hancock

September 5, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

HANCOCK?- One year and two months ago, North Coast Counseling Services, LLC moved from a one-room office in Houghton to a larger office complex in Hancock. After renovations and adding staff they're ready to invite the public in to visit and see the facility for themselves.

Tim Payment, MS, LPC, NCC, ICAADC, CCSOTS states that the larger facility was needed to accommodate the client flow experienced in Houghton.

"What I found is that the local need for confidential and comprehensive behavioral health services exceeded my previous estimation. So I found a larger office complex, invested in the renovation and brought on some additional staff," he said.

North Coast Counseling Services LLC has been in existence since 2006. Tim is pursuing his doctoral degree in clinical psychology and is a U.S. Air Force veteran. He has been involved in the mental health and substance abuse treatment communities for 22-plus years.

"We strive to identify community needs and work collaboratively with other community agencies to better serve the most vulnerable citizens," he said. "We do that by offering clinical mental health, general emotional disorder and comprehensive addiction counseling to all walks of life. We have experience working with children, teenagers, adults of all ages, and the elderly."

To further clarify the services offered within the addiction realm, North Coast Counseling Services, LLC can offer OUIL evaluations, AHSE/Alcohol Highway Safety Education services, Driver's License Restoration Services (for those who have lost their license due to drunk- or drug-related driving incidents), Substance Abuse Evaluations, Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Intervention Services, and Family Counseling Services.

"In addition, we offer other process addiction services, such as pathological gambling addiction therapy, sex addiction, Internet addiction, smoking cessation aid, and food addiction services," he said. "Also, at North Coast Counseling Services, LLC we can offer other services such as Anger Management Groups, Domestic Violence/Batterer's Intervention Services, Sex Offender Evaluation, and treatment services. Other available services include: Crisis Intervention, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Prevention Services, Drug Testing, and Employee Assistance Programming."

Recent additions to the practice include:

Jill Moore LMSW, (CAC-applicant). Jill has been with North Coast Counseling Services, LLC for approximately one year. Last year, she served exclusively in the Ontonagon School District while providing outreach services in Baraga County. This year, her focus will expand to include outreach services in Baraga, Houghton, and Ontonagon Counties. She will still maintain an office in the Ontonagon School District, but will be more available than previously to provide services both in the new Hancock office, and Houghton county as well. She has 12 years of experience working with children and families and is excited to be working across the Copper Country. Citing previous work experience in a local juvenile residential setting she believes that she can offer the community a wealth of experience and tools. She jokingly adds that "I'm the counselor in the car," and is happy to come to you if you can't make it to one of the two office settings. Jill indicates that some of her additional areas of expertise include substance abuse counseling, working with the Infant Mental Health population, teaching effective parenting skills, and notes that she is an instructor for early childhood courses at a local community college.

Carol Salo LMSW, CAADC has 30-plus years experience working with children and families in her previous career as a teacher. Seven years into the Behavioral Health field, she specializes in providing services for all walks of life and is very passionate about working with victims of domestic violence. Helping families to recover from substance abuse addictions, Carol brings that certain presence of calm and soothing that children require in order to make therapeutic progress. She's not limited to working with children, as she provides outreach services to several elderly care homes and facilities in the Copper Country. In the recent past, she was in independent private practice as well as working for a nonprofit behavioral health agency that has since closed in our area. Carol is a life-long resident of the Copper Country and states that she understands the needs of the community very well. Serving primarily office-based services in the Hancock office, she indicates that she is open to providing outreach services into Keweenaw, Houghton and Baraga Counties as well. She also provides a depression recovery support group on a weekly basis that is always welcoming new additions.

Laura Cooley BS, (CAC applicant) is currently the office manager for the growing practice. However, she also provides behavioral health services. During this past school year, she provided mental health screening services and anger management groups for the BRIDGE Alternative School in Hancock. Laura is currently pursuing her master's degree in counseling and anticipates to complete that degree within the next couple of years. She reports that she had completed her bachelor's degree in psychology with a concentration on Substance Abuse Counseling at Finlandia University. Many clients report that interacting with Laura has been a highlight of their day, and makes entering into the counseling process a pleasure.

Other services include: School and organizational consultation, education advocacy for children and families who aren't familiar with the special education process, military veterans' services, ADHD services, medication coordination services with local physicians, and jail-based counseling and evaluation services.

In addition, North Coast Counseling Services, LLC is the primary contributor to a new nonprofit social based recovery center in Hubbell. An ALANO club is opening in the old IGA grocery store. This will be an inviting, relaxing place where people in recovery can come to socialize, relax and recover in community.
