Katri “Kay” D. Laakso

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP - Katri D. Laakso, 91, a former resident of Portage Township, passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 5, 2012, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past three years.

She was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Chassell, a daughter of the late Edward and Hilma (Rolig) Ryynanen. Katri was a graduate of Houghton High School.

On March 15, 1941, she was united in marriage to Aulis Laakso and the couple resided on the Paradise Road. After 65 years of marriage, on Dec. 23, 2007, Aulis preceded her in death.

Mrs. Laakso was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Houghton.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; son, Edward Laakso; granddaughter, Elizabeth Bekkala; great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Bekkala; her sisters, Ellen Ryynanen and Esther Ryynanen; and brothers, Eino and Edwin.

Surviving are her children, Sarah (John) Bekkala of Chassell, Ronald Laakso of Livonia, John (Karen) Laakso of Canton, Ga., and Mary Parske of Kasilof, Alaska; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; her sister, Edna Ryynanen, a resident patient of Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Katri will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Richard Eskola to officiate. Burial to be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton.

Friends may call on Saturday from noon until time of services.

There will be a luncheon for friends and family at Sarah and John Bekkala's home after the services.
