Rita J. (Bishop) Peterson

CHASSELL - Rita J. Peterson passed away peacefully at the Omega House in Houghton on Sept. 9, 2012, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Chassell to Albert and Bertha (Fish) Bishop in 1923.

Rita attended St. Ignatius School, Houghton High School and Suomi College.

During WWII, she worked as a stenographer for the Navy in Detroit. She returned to the Copper Country and married Robert J. Peterson in September of 1945. They moved to Lansing and Detroit, where they raised their family.

Rita is survived by her husband, Robert; her four children, Terry Peterson, Michael (Diane) Peterson, Barbara Zackal and Nancy Wilson; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Ethel Bishop; and 21 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Lesley (Elynore) Bishop and John (Berenice) Bishop.

A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, from St. Anne Church in Chassell. The family will receive friends before Mass from 10 to 11 a.m. Lunch will follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Anne Church or to the Omega House.

The Plowe Funeral Home in Houghton is assisting the family with arrangements.
