Dana Richter, far right, gives a talk about former Hancock-area resident “Big Louie” Moilanen Sunday at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the “Copper Country giant’s” death. Richter, with Mike Gemignani, is working to raise funds for a granite monument in Moilanen’s honor. The monument will be 8 feet, 3 inches tall, which is supposedly how tall Moilanen was when he died. The monument will be erected in front of the Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center on Quincy Street in Hancock. Richter said $4,000 toward the expected $5,000 cost of creating and erecting the monument has been raised. Richter is holding an 8-feet-long stick to give an idea how tall Moilanen was.
