CALUMET - Vaino (Ted) Kauppila, 89, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he was a resident patient since May 2001.
He was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Gay, the son of Waino and Anna (Waara) Kauppila. He attended school in Copper City.
Vaino served in the military for 10 years and saw action during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of staff sergeant.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Walter; sisters-in-law, Marie, Bertha and Adeline; infant sister, Kathleen.
He is survived by four brothers, Paul of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Gordon of Morrice, Mich., Donald (Barbara) of Chandler, Ariz., and Kenneth (Arlene) of McHenry, Ill.; four sisters, Florence Paakola of Waukegan, Il., Mildred (John) Taube of Lantana, Fla., Phyllis (George) Tarnowski of Laurium and Carol (Gordon) Usitalo of Kearsarge; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Kauppila will be held at 1 p.m. in the Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Jim Heikkinen officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet where the Copper Country Veterans will hold Military Honors.
