Calumet cross country girls close in on perfect score

CHASSELL - The Calumet girls came even closer to a perfect team score Thursday in the Dollar Bay Invitational at the Chassell Ski Trails, taking the top four places and seventh for a total of just 17 points.

Houghton was second with 53, followed by Dollar Bay (122), Jeffers (123), Ironwood and Hancock (132).

Tara Kiilunen was the individual winner, completing the course in 20 minutes, 25 seconds, 17 seconds ahead of sister Leah. Rachel Poyhonen (20:45) was third and Abbey Helppi (21:22) fourth.

Hannah Palmeter of Ironwood was the first to interrupt Calumet's dominance, taking fifth, followed by Jessica Schlaff of Houghton.

The fifth Calumet runner, Evelyn Delong, came in seventh.

Ashley Laux of Houghton, Erin McKenzie of Hancock and Meeghan Randell of Jeffers rounded out the top 10.

On the boys' side, Houghton remained on top with 32 points to Calumet's 57. Hancock (104), Dollar Bay (114), Jeffers (136) and Ironwood (145) rounded out the field.

Jacob Colling of Houghton claimed the individual victory with a 17:59, finishing ahead of teammate David Jaszczak by a narrow three-second margin.

Devin Berg of Calumet, winner of Monday's Houghton Invite, was third in 18:11.

Brett Houle led Dollar Bay with a sixth-place finish, followed by Josh Larson of Calumet, Isaac Stone of Houghton, Maxx Fredrickson of Calumet and Colin Campbell of Houghton to round out the top 10.

Several local teams will be at the Munising Invitational next Tuesday to compete over the same course on which U.P. Finals will take place in October.
