LAURIUM - Waino A. Kuitunen, 82, a resident of Florida Location, Laurium, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock.
He was born April 15, 1930, in Mohawk, the son of Waino and Martha (Aho) Kuitunen. He attended the Mohawk School and Calumet High School as he grew up in Fulton.
Waino worked for the Burroughs Corp. General Motors & Detroit Diesel Division for 30 years, retiring in 1988. In 1989, he moved back to Florida Location.
He was a veteran, having served for 18 months with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Waino was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, VFW Post 3900 in Calumet and was a life member of the Finnish Association in Farmington, Mich.
He enjoyed skating with the seniors at the Colosseum, cross country skiing, biking and being outdoors. Waino was a friend to everyone. His biggest love was for his family.
Waino married the former Fay Bammert on Aug. 7, 1954. The celebrated 58 years of marriage together.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Felix Hjort; a son, Daniel; a brother, Irving; and a sister, Jean Bammert.
He is survived by his wife, Fay; two sons, David (Pam) Kuitunen of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Kevin Kuitunen of Ontonagon; two daughters, Sandra (Michael) Renaud of Belle River, Ontario and Lisa (Michael) Harju of Laurium; six grandchildren, Christoper, Melissa, Bret, Rachelle, Ashley and Mark; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet with Rev. Peter Vorhes officiating.
Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
