HANCOCK - Kathryn Ann Manninen, 91, a former Tapiola, Chassell and Arbor Green, Houghton, resident, died on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
She was born in Tapiola on Dec. 10, 1920, a daughter of the late Axel Peter and Ida Marie (Heikkinen) Hyypio and attended the Tapiola School.
On July 3, 1941, she was married to Ray Manninen in Fremont, Ohio. In their early years of marriage, the couple lived in Detroit and later moved to Chassell where they resided for more than 50 years.
Kathryn was a member of the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church. She provided a strong Christian home for her family. She loved the Lord and wanted to teach her children to serve the Lord.
Kathryn was a talented carpenter. She did a lot of carpentry work around her home herself. She was involved with 4-H and also enjoyed bowling, sewing and baking. She had a gift for hospitality and made everyone who visited her home feel welcome.
Surviving are three sons and one daughter, Kenneth (Marianne) Manninen of Fenton, Mich., Joseph Manninen of Mancelona, Mich., Rachel (John) Nadeau of Munising and Glen (Mary) Manninen of Chassell; two grandchildren, Tom (Maria) Nadeau of Dallas, Texas, and Heather (Steve) Griffith of Kingsley, Mich.; three great- grandchildren, Coleman, Jackson and Marina Nadeau; one brother, Edward (Evelyn) Hyypio of Fenton, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Kathyrn was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilia Knuuttila and Martha Siegfried; a brother, George, who was killed while serving during WWII; a great-grandaughter, Rachel Marie Nadeau; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Manninen; and a nephew, Jerry Knuuttila.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Pastor Arvo Onermaa to officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and one hour prior to services on Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
