CALUMET - I, Jean Loretta Paulson, a resident of Calumet, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at the Omega House after a long battle with cancer.
I was born in Kearsarge Jan. 25, 1932, the daughter of Fred and Helen "Toots" Winquist.
I was preceded in death by my husband, Willard; my parents; grandparents, Rose and Delore Perreault and Mary and Fred Winquist; and a younger brother, Carl Robert.
I appreciated my son, Marko and his wife, Julie, for taking me in when I couldn't stay in my apartment on different occasions.
I attended Kearsarge, Morrison, Washington and Calumet High School. In my younger days, I worked at Finlandia Restaurant, Bracco Bakery and F.W. Woolworths. After my children were in school full time, I went to work at Michigan Technological University in the business office where I worked for just under 25 years, retiring at the age of 60 in 1992.
I was an avid sports fan, following the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings. Fortunately, I was able to go and see them all. My most memorable trip was set up by my son, Marko, and Dr. McConnon, where I was able to go on the field, get autographs and have pictures taken with Ordonez, Inge, Cabrera and Granderson. We also toured the broadcast studio and I got photographed with Rod Allen and was presented with a plaque and Tiger shirt. This was a complete surprise to me as it was kept a secret until I arrived at Comerica Park for the game.
My survivors include my brothers, Garfield of Ontonagon and Paul "Ozzie" (Judy) of Copper City; a sister, Darlene (Robert) Talvensaari of Florida; my children, Dwain, Bruce (Connie), Marko (Julie) and Cheryl (Dan) Antilla; my grandchildren, Scott and Jamie Paulson, Kristin (Joel) Isaacson, Amber (Craig) Stancher, Jeremy (friend Nancy) Greg Hattula and Mandy (Bob) Kumpula. My great-grandchildren, Aidan and Keira Isaacson, Charlotte and Brynn Kumpula and twins, Paisleigh and Aspen Paulson. Also surviving is an aunt, Myrtle Luoma of Cypress Manor; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
I was very pleased with my sons, Bruce and Marko for doing so well with the Luigi's family business started by them and their father.
I'm also very grateful for the great care I received from my physician and good friend, Dr. McConnon. Also, the staff at Portage Health, Portage Home Health, especially Melanie and Jenn, Marquette General Hospital, Mercy EMS and the Omega House.
I request that my body be cremated and my remains be joined with those of my special friend in a special place.
Ryan Funeral Home is assisting the family.
A get-together to remember me will be held at Luigi's on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m., and a special goodbye to my extended family at Luigi's.
