HOUGHTON?- Calumet native Ben Storm had a busy week last week. The Muskegon Lumberjacks defenseman announced his commitment to play for St. Cloud State University and scored in the United States Hockey League Fall Classic.
Storm scored the game-winning goal in Muskegon's 2-1 decision over Sioux Falls Friday in the preseason tournament.
Storm and the Lumberjacks open the season at home Saturday against the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team.
Storm is not the first Copper King to play for St. Cloud:?Brian Giachino transferred to SCSU?from Tech and played there in the 1988-89 season.
Devin Kero of Hancock is under way with the Coulee Region (Wis.) Chill in the North American Hockey League. Kero took the loss in a 4-1 defeat to Topeka Sept. 14.
Calumet's Jesse Junttila is also active in the league for the Kalamazoo Junior K-Wings. In five games, he's taken eight shots and is a plus-2.
Calumet's Levi Erkkila made the Michigan Warriors of the NAHL. The forward has a pair of assists in five games for the Flint-based team.
Wade Hanke of Hancock has an assist through six games with the Marquette Electricians at the Midget AAA level.
Baraga alum Gabby Jukkala has helped the Northland College volleyball team during a busy start.
The Lumberjills have already played 15 matches this season, winning five. Jukkala is averaging 2.1 kills per set, second on the team. She's also second on the team in service aces with 33.
