Calling all angels

September 28, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

My name is Dennis Matlock and I'm writing this to bring to light a honest to goodness angel sighting right here in Houghton.

On the morning of July 17 at 3:30 a.m. the Houghton Police Department pulled me over for speeding. The officer was nice and let me off with a warning - how cool! Then he arrested me for the .11 that I blew into the breathalyzer.

Well, due to his actions that morning, I've been sober for two months now. I know two months seems like nothing to most of us, but when you have been battling back for 2.5 years from a relapse back onto alcohol, losing every material possession, job and the most beautiful lady in the world, my wife. Being sober is like curling up in front of a blazing fireplace with your favorite blanket.

I did my crime in public and so I apologize in public. Plus, thank you to the office for doing your job that morning; because of you, I have regained my sober footing.
