Flora Knudson

WINONA - Flora Knudson, 89, a former resident of Winona and Heritage Manor in Houghton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Medora House of PortagePointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient since 2008.

She was born January 16, 1923, in Winona, a daughter of the late Matt and Helmi (Makiaho) Leppanen. Flora graduated from Winona High School with the Class of 1941.

She moved to Detroit immediately following graduation where she was united in marriage to Leonard Vern Knudson. While residing in the Detroit area, Flora was employed by Michigan Bell.

Flora and Vern returned to make their home in Twin Lakes where they lived for many years.

She retired from Elm River Township School in Winona where she taught art and music.

After divorcing, Flora moved to Houghton where she met a very special friend, Don Warner.

Flora was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Winona where she was the organist for many years. She loved nature and her love of animals showed with her support of many animal welfare organizations. She was an accomplished artist in many mediums, but her favorite was oil painting. Flora was also an extremely talented musician and could play the organ and piano beautifully. Flora loved dancing and she and Don would go to the South Range Eagles Club for dances. She had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. She will be sorely missed.

Preceding her in death were her son, Steven; her parents; her sisters, Tyne Leppanen and Viola Peterson; her brothers, Ralph Brynolf Leppanen and Wilbert Leppanen; special friend, Don Warner.

Surviving are her sons, Ronald Knudson of Fla. and Donald Knudson of Minn.; her grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Leppanen of Winona; numerous nieces, nephews and relatives in Finland.

Funeral services for Flora will be held at 2:30 Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 in the First Lutheran Church in Winona with Rev. Jon Autio to officiate. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery in Winona.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 p.m. until time of services in the church.
