Jennie Elaine (Komula) Niemi

TOIVOLA - Jennie Elaine Niemi, 86, of Toivola, died on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Portage Health. She had been a resident patient of Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock for the past four years.

She was born in Toivola on May 24, 1926, a daughter of the late Anton and Christina (Ahistus) Komula and attended the Perala School in Toivola.

On July 18, 1942, she was married to William H. Niemi in South Range. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1992. Jennie was a member of the Toivola Apostolic Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, crafting, water and oil painting and spending time at Misery Bay.

Surviving are three daughters and one son: Sandra (Martin) Johnson of Toivola, Susan Niemi of Santa Clara, Calif., Kathleen (Douglas) Vettori of Hancock and Matthew (Daylania) Niemi of Toivola; 10 grandchildren: David (Gisele) Johnson, Keven (Chris) Johnson, Kris (Laura) Johnson, Adam Johnson, Karen (Eric) Bork, Brenda (Russell) Pulkkinen, Andrew Stansbury, Tracy Ponnikas and fiance, Tim Pierner, Lisa (Russell) Kyllonen and Gina (David) Fredianelli; 14 geat-grandchildren, Daniel, Gabriel and Dustin Johnson, Alexis, Seth, McKenzie and Kyle Johnson, Kailin and Brian Ponnikas, Nichole (Brady) McCloskey, Vicky and Isaac Kyllonen, Michael (Amanda) Vettori and Evan (Jen) Miner; eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Kazmir and Aelah McCloskey, Gabriel Vettori, Jacob Miner, Adriana Kyllonen, William and Amber Flaherty; a brother-in-law, Robert Lakosky; sister-in-law, Mildred Lakosky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband and parents, Jennie was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen Mae Niemi; a daughter, Jennie Cohen; a son, William Niemi, Jr.; a granddaughter, Christel Lynn Johnson; three sisters, Agnes McClure, Esther Staisil and Mildred Thornton; and one brother, Edwin Komula.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Pastor Ken Storm to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday in the mortuary. Burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
