Mary Ann Sivonen

PAINESDALE - Mary Ann Sivonen, 93, a resident of Painesdale, died on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at Portage Health.

She was born in Painesdale January 29, 1919, a daughter of the late George and Vincencija (Markovich) Volf.

Mary graduated from Painesdale High School in 1936. She then attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, graduating in 1941 as a registered nurse.

Mary was first employed as an RN at the Trimountain Hospital. She then worked at the Houghton Sanitarium and prior to retiring in 1974, worked for 18 years at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

On June 10, 1944, she was married to Waino "Bud" Sivonen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Painesdale. He preceded her in death on November 10, 2011.

Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range and the former Sacred Heart Altar Society.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and working crossword puzzles.

Surviving are two sons, David Sivonen of Chassell and his special friend, Jane Larson and Daniel (Mary) Sivonen of South Range; five grandchildren, Shelly Sivonen, Cory Sivonen, Ken Rivest, Nicole Hiltunen and Danielle Bruursema; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, Mary was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ann and Rose Volf; and three brothers, Joe, John and Blash Volf.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 in Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant.Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass on Friday in the church. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church in the name of Mary A. Sivonen.
