HOUGHTON - Houghton turned the tables on WestPAC rival Calumet Saturday, handing the Copper Kings their first defeat of the season against Upper Peninsula opposition in the final of their Gremlin Invitational.
The Gremlins took the championship match 2-0 (25-23, 25-19), the exact same score as in 2011.
In the final, Houghton got six kills, three block kills and two aces from Blaire Zenner, plus five kills and seven digs from Sidney Dillinger. Natalie Datto dished out 15 assists and Mackenzie Hietala led the Gremlins defensively with 16 digs.
The Gremlins took care of business in their Orange pool, sweeping three matches from L'Anse, Chassell and Baraga. Calumet went undefeated through Gladstone, Ishpeming and Dollar Bay in the Black pool, while Lake Linden-Hubbell took down Marquette, Hancock and the Houghton JVs to win the White pool.
All four quarterfinals were sweeps, with Calumet taking out Ishpeming, L'Anse eliminating Gladstone, Houghton bouncing Chassell and LL-H defeating Marquette.
Calumet earned a 2-0 victory over L'Anse in one semi, while the Gremlins topped the Lakes 2-0 (25-20, 25-19) in the other semi.
The Gremlins and Copper Kings will meet agan Tuesday night in Calumet in WestPAC play.
