Husky volleyball splits Saturday matches at crossover tourney

AURORA, Ill. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team picked up its sixth win of the season with a five-set win over St. Joseph's Saturday at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament.

The Huskies dropped a 3-0 match to Illinois-Springfield earlier in the day.?The Huskies opened the St. Joseph's match with a 5-0 run and never relinquished the lead to win the first set 25-22.

Tech relied on a 7-1 run midway through the second set to take a 17-11 lead before winning set two 25-17.?"The third set we just didn't execute well," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. The Huskies lost the set 25-17.?The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than four points. The Pumas forced a fifth set after winning in extra points 27-25.?"I challenged the team to step-up their energy level and focus in the fifth set," said Jennings. "I was happy to see the team step up."?The team was nearly flawless in the final set, hitting .529 without a single attack error.?Jennings praised the play of Shelby Jones, who finished with a match-high 20 kills and 13 digs.?Sylvie Rokosh tallied 15 kills, and Aubrey Havlichek recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.?"We switched Sylvie to the right and Aubrey to outside for the match," said Jennings. "It is not easy for two freshmen to make the change and succeed as well as both of them did."?Jones and Rokosh each recorded 10 kills to lead the Huskies against Illinois-Springfield.

The team will play a pair of matches today against Indiana-Kokomo and Lewis.
